About the Work
Chicago is a great theater town. At any one time we have about
one hundred and thirty plays running. That includes fifteen
to twenty openings a week. After I see a play I work out a
drawing as a way of understanding what I just participated
in. I don’t draw during the performance. The play hits
me the next day in my studio. It doesn’t leave me alone
until the drawing comes together. During the work process a
collage idea will often come up and there’s always a
word from the play that surfaces in my memory. This word will
appear somewhere at the edge of the drawing.
